TEDx Event In Atlanta December 14, 2017 21:08
This post is long overdue.
A little background for those not familiar with TED Talks or TEDx Events. TED Talks are these amazing presentations given by people on every topic imaginable. You can find them all online, but there are also local events for certain areas, known as TEDx. We're lucky to have one here called TEDx Peachtree.
In 2014, I was fortunate to meet and be hired by the head of the TEDx Peachtree event. The theme for that year was "Illumination". In addition to the regular presentations, the event coordinators wanted to have an immersive portion of the whole experience. This would be a part that people would engage before, in between, and after the presentations.
After meeting with the planners, design team and other artists, we determined I would need to create 6 paintings. Most of you are probably familiar with the way my paintings work in person - some are easier to see, some are harder. For this particular occasion I decided to intentionally make them varying degrees of difficulty. As part of the immersion I thought it would be interesting for people to experience them in different ways, depending on which degree of difficulty they began with.
The subjects themselves are also intended to relate to the theme. There are literal light bulbs, books, someone thinking under the stars and two spaces that I felt can lead to illumination - a trail through the woods and a library.
The event was a huge success and I was lucky enough to attend all the presentations. If you've never seen a TED Talk, I would highly recommend any of them that sound interesting to you. I've never seen one that I didn't walk away from feeling like I learned something or was given a new idea.
Here's to always learning.
